Notes :Not to discourage people seeking challenges and beauty... 1) This is NOT a family for the faint-of-heart, nor for those who believe that nearly every shell purchased from a dealer is correctly identified (although we try our best!!!) It is by far the largest family of molluscs - shell-bearing or otherwise - and there are a wonderful (ok - some people would not use this precise word!!) number of deeper-water (and even shallow-water!) species which simply do not have a name yet (ie, they are "undescribed"), as well as an unholy percentage of species which, although described SOMEWHERE, SOMETIME by SOMEONE, are the very Devil himself to correctly identify even to genus level, SO, why would ANYONE in their right mind wish to collect such a troublesome lot?? Well, the challenge of tackling the biggest, meanest gang of molluscs ever to hit the world - ocean has a certain magnetic attraction to certain people who THRIVE on Major Challenges, and like to solve insanely difficult puzzles in their spare time. OF COURSE one doesn't have to go Whole Hog into the entire family in order to have fun, Fun, FUN! (Insert wild, maniacal laughter here...) Why not just try a genus, supergenus, tribe or subfamily to start off with?? You may never be bored again!!!2) For those who love the intricate sculpture, endless surprise and variety of the awesome world of MICROSHELLS, this is YOUR family!!! Many of the Turrids are on the "miniature" side, and have splendid sculpture only visible by getting "up close and personal", via a hand-lens (10 - 15X is enough for people with reasonable eyesight) or binocular microscope. I recommend the Lienardia below, as a solid introduction to this truly fascinating side of the Shell World. |
