-Shell small with a depressed conic spire; roseate protoconch; smooth; body whorl

mostly orange or yellow, also white, purple and greenish tan; spire more faintly
tinted; a band of a row of distinctly connected blotches of a light tint; aperture
same colour as body whorl.

axial sculpture of numerous arched threads on shoulder, evanescing at carina, last

and narrower when crossing spiral cords, spiral sculpture of two to four strong threads
posterior to carina, creating reticulations at shoulder when crossing over axial
elements, threads followed by a heavy, nodulose, otherwise smooth cord and one or
two undulating threads anterior to carina, last whorl with flat, evenly distributed
spiral cords, cords as wide as interspaces, minutely wrinkled bu axial threads; colour
light cream

and aperture pink orange-salmon; siphonal fasciole whitish axial flammules at the
last body whorl darker; colour pattern made up by spiral rows of alternate white
and orange-salmon tending to form three strips; one below the shoulder, one below
mid body, one and one at the base.

- A "sub-form" (a more solid and broader sympatric variant with 3 spiral
colour bands) of cholmondeleyi Melvill. Linnaeus, who invented the binomial
system to simplify things, would NOT approve - yet in this case it would appear to
be a perfectly legitimate quatranomial, since the variant in question is easily and
consistantly differentiated from its "parent form", although admittedly,
intergrades do occur!! (Mayhew)

a synonym of Conus cardinalis or possibly valid
- A shell with straight sides and sharply-angled shoulder; shoulder ornamented with
large rounded knobs projecting outwards from shoulder; spire low and flattened; projecting
only on earliest whorls; body whorl coloured bright pink, overlaid with 2 wide, broken
bands of deep orange-red, which in turn, are overlaid with scattered dark brown flammules
and hairlines; pustulated spiral cords with small dots; spire whorls pink with small
orange-brown flammules; protoconch dark pink.
